Marv Thorley started Thorley Headers in a one-bay Canton garage because no one else would bend tubing the way he bent it for his own race engines. Forty-five years later, 47 craftsmen still do it the same way — mandrel-bent, hand-ported, built to outlast the chassis they bolt onto.
The Origin
From a one-bay Canton garage to 38,000 square feet of mandrel benders.
Marv Thorley was building small-block Chevys for local tracks in 1977 when he realized the aftermarket headers on the shelf were killing his torque curve. Crush bends. Stagnant flow. Sheet-metal flanges that warped after two heat cycles. So he started bending his own tubing on a borrowed mandrel bender in his Canton garage — and racers kept asking him to build sets for them.
By the spring of 1978, the garage was full and Marv leased a 2,400 square-foot bay on Industrial Boulevard. He drew up the first Thorley Tri-Y on a napkin, hand-ported every flange himself, and put a lifetime no-rust-through warranty on the back of every invoice. That warranty is still honored on every header we ship — the same way, from the same building, four and a half decades later.
Today the shop is 38,000 square feet, employs 47 craftsmen, engineers, and warehouse staff, and houses North America's largest in-stock header library at 1,860+ SKUs covering 1964 through 2024 applications. The mandrel bender Marv borrowed in '78 has been retired. The standard he set with it hasn't.
